** UPDATE ** Continuing Transformation in Public Sector

Chameleon Works has recently supported a public sector organisation through the challenge of rebuilding teams in the front line of Adult Social care. The work we completed followed a period of redundancies and restructuring as part of large scale cuts. Like most public sector organisations, the people in the front line operational roles have seen changes to the people they work with, tasks they complete and processes they follow. The scale of the changes can mean that individuals either adapt quickly or derail completely.

Our approach has been to see the changes as both a psychological and practical process. We brought people in one of the larger teams affected by the changes together for a workshop for a day. Our agenda focused on discussing their reactions to change, hearing their feedback and encouraging their ideas for some of the bigger problems to solve. We found that taking the team through this approach allowed them time to talk about the change in a way that they had not had chance to earlier.

Following the workshop, the focus moved to encouraging leaders to communicate with the team members regularly and consistently to make sure that the trust is built.  We found that giving teams carefully facilitated "time out" to learn about the predictable stages of change and to "offload" is hugely beneficial to moving forwards.

With a clear communication plan and self aware team members, leaders can benefit from turning a highly dependent, change fatigued team into one that co-creates its new destination.
